Celebrating Women’s History Month: Leadership and Inspiration at Northfield Bank

March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women across all industries. Northfield Bank takes pride in working alongside women who motivate others every day. To celebrate, three inspirational leaders at the bank shared insights about the people who have inspired them most and shared the advice they would give to aspiring leaders.
Martha Pellegrino: Vice President of Property Management
Who has inspired you and why?
“That’s easy—my mom. At 95, she continues to inspire me every single day. She is incredibly independent and instilled that same independence in me. Despite being from a generation where women traditionally married, had children, and rarely worked outside the home, she held progressive views. She managed our family’s finances and taught me the importance of budgeting, balancing a checkbook, and living within my means. She also showed me the value of hard work and being proud of my accomplishments.”
What advice would you give to aspiring leaders?
“One highly respected executive in the New York real estate industry once said, ‘Stress will dumb you down.’ That statement couldn’t be more true. Stress interrupts your ability to think clearly and take action.”
“Another leader I worked for saw me agonizing over a large-scale project and told me, ‘Remember, no one will die if you make a mistake. Our work is important, but we aren’t brain surgeons!’ It was a lighthearted reminder to trust myself. Finally, I was once reminded by a friend in investigations that integrity is everything—your name stays with you throughout your career, so protect it and never compromise your values.”
Kathleen Owsiany: Senior Vice President of Deposit Operations
Who has inspired you and why?
“My mom was by far the most inspiring person I’ve ever met. She faced significant challenges throughout her life, yet she remained the most giving and compassionate person I’ve known.”
What advice would you give to aspiring leaders?
“Be humble. Admit your shortcomings, and recognize and appreciate the strengths of others.”
Laurie Guinta: Senior Vice President, Staten Island Regional Manager
Who has inspired you and why?
“The person who has inspired me most in my life is my mom. She taught me to be empathetic in the face of others’ despair, grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given, and always be ready to stand up for myself and others. Because of her, I am exceptionally strong. She is, without a doubt, the best soul I will ever know.”
What advice would you give to aspiring leaders?
“Success is not only measured by your own growth; it’s also about inspiring, empowering, and paving the way for others. Lift as you climb.”
Honoring Leadership and Legacy
These stories highlight how inspiration often begins at home; shaped by strong, compassionate, and resilient role models. Their advice emphasizes the importance of humility, integrity, and the responsibility to support and uplift others.
As Women’s History Month is celebrated, it is a time to recognize the women who have guided, mentored, and empowered others while fostering an environment where future generations of women leaders can thrive.
